Big Meech, whose real name is Demetrius Flenory, is a well-known figure in the world of organized crime, particularly due to his role in the Black Mafia Family (BMF). He was born on June 21, 1968, in Detroit, Michigan. Along with his brother, Terry "Southwest T" Flenory, Big Meech co-founded the BMF, a drug trafficking and money laundering organization.
In the early 2000s, BMF became infamous for its involvement in large-scale cocaine distribution throughout the United States. At its peak, the organization was considered one of the most powerful drug trafficking operations in the country, and it generated immense profits. BMF's activities weren't limited to drug trafficking; they also attempted to establish a foothold in the hip-hop music industry, promoting artists and building a brand around their lifestyle.
In 2005, Big Meech and his brother were arrested and subsequently charged with running a continuing criminal enterprise. In 2008, both were sentenced to 30 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to the charges. Over the years, Big Meech has become a somewhat legendary figure, particularly in hip-hop culture, often romanticized in songs and media.
In 2020, due to changes in sentencing guidelines and good behavior, there was consideration for a reduction in his sentence, and in June 2021, his sentence was further reduced by three years, making him eligible for release in 2028. Additionally, his life and the rise and fall of the BMF have been chronicled in various documentaries and dramatizations, including the TV series "BMF," produced by rapper Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson and premiering on Starz.
